If Renault can do the Twingo, why can’t VW replace the Up! with exactly what Torch drew?

The original conept of the Up! was rear engined, just like the Twingo. The reason Renault could pull through while VW couldn’t is Smart: the Twingo will be the next Smart ForTwo, so the numbers are sufficient to make it worthwhile to produce the otherwise mostly standalone platform, while VW couldn’t rustle up a business case this strong.

Yes, the rear engine design just couldn’t be made at a price that would make money. Things like the long hoses going forward to a radiator and a gear linkage going back all add up.
